Today we learned that we can be mini teachers when we have conversations with a partner in the classroom. We have to stay on topic. and make sure we are saying appropriate things. We sit knee-to-knee and face-to-face. Today our topic was weather. First, we learned about different types of weather. We talked about how different types of weather form. We talked about water evaporating from the sun to the clouds. We learned that tornadoes can go up to 400 mph. We love the weather. We will continue to work on our conversation skills throughout the year.
We did a science experiment with celery. We wanted to find out what would happen when we put celery in food coloring. We predicted the celery would stay the same. The celery we put in plain water didn’t change colors. The celery in the food coloring drank the water and the flowers turned purple. This experiment showed that stems carry water to the parts of plants. Daylight Savings Time ended on Saturday. Hopefully getting up will be easier on Monday as the sunrise is at 6:36 AM.
Today we talked about costumes for the parade on Thursday. We put our costume in a bag, we mark our name on it and we put it in our cubbies when we get to school. Then, we leave it there until after computer lab. We will put our costumes on and get ready for the parade after computer lab time. You are not allowed to wear hair dye or face makeup, nothing that is bloody or gory, no masks, and no weapons of any kind. Costumes should meet school dress code requirements. If you are not organized do not bring small costume parts. These are things you can bring and can’t bring for Thursday, October 31.
by Room 26Simple machines make work easier. A pulley is a simple machine. It uses a rope and a wheel with a groove to lift things. Some example of a pulley include a flagpole, blinds, and wells. Another simple machine is a wheel and axle. This is a wheel that turns around a rod. We see wheel and axles everywhere. Bicycles, strollers, and skateboards are examples of simple machines. Simple machines help people do extraordinary things.
Today we learned about what park rangers do from a real park ranger. We had a visit from Ranger John, who works at Henry Coe Park. He told us that he helps to protect the park, and the people and animals in the park. He also presents information to groups. He makes sure the park is safe by patrolling and talking with groups of people. He gets people the help they need and makes sure the forest doesn’t burn down.
Ranger John wears a utility belt as part of his job. On the belt he has 10 things that help him in his job. First he has pepper spray, a gun, a baton, and handcuffs. This helps him stop people from doing bad things. He also has a radio and a phone, to keep in touch with other rangers. Some other items on his utility belt include a flashlight, gloves, ammunition, and keys to the park. Ranger John brought animal skins for us to touch. These pelts came from local animals that died naturally. There were also two skull bones for us to look at. In addition, we were able to touch and hold deer antlers. We talked about some of the animals that live in the local area. Ranger John’s visit was a great way for us to learn more about the job of a park ranger. This week students read a story about a pig named Julius who needed to learn some manners. As a response to reading, they were to think about the rules at home and write one of the rules. Here are a few of the responses:
We started the week by writing a plot line summary of our story Dragon Goes Shopping. We also worked on subtraction in math. We learned that by knowing the addition fact, we can more easily figure out the answer to the subtraction fact. We also took our first benchmark tests of the year. We had to learn to bubble the answer sheet. That was the most difficult part of the task! Thirteen students thought that taking the benchmarks was a fun thing to do. Six students did not like doing the tests. (Several students were doing a small group activity and did not vote.) During the benchmarks we hosted some students from Mrs. Purtell's class. Another exciting activity was going to the computer lab and starting to use SuccessMaker Reading.
One hundred percent of the class recited the poem, a few needed a little help from their friends. Also, we took our spelling test today. Last week's test is in today's Friday Folder. This week's test will be in next Friday's Folder. We learned about being a good citizen. We learned good citizens help other people and are kind. Also, they show lots of respect, are responsible, and fair. In addition, we said good citizens follow the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. In math we've been learning about doubles and near doubles facts. Today we learned that the order of the addends doesn't change the sum. We are learning about healthy eating and writing a paragraph about why eating healthy is important. We had celery for a snack! Nineteen students thought the celery was good (with ranch dressing.) Yesterday the Principal, Mrs. Neal, visited our classroom. She reminded us not to say bad words. She also said that when you arrive at school in a car, you should be ready to get out quickly with your backpack in the car with you. Another thing she told us was to wear clothing that is good for play, p.e. and recess. This includes shoes with backs, and no spaghetti strap tops. Tops should have at least a two finger width at the shoulder. Tomorrow morning our class gets to lead the whole school in the Star-Spangled Banner.
Today our signal word was vegetables. We talked about healthy eating and wrote about foods we like to eat. Everyone had to close their paragraph with a statement saying whether or not their favorite foods are healthy. In math we learned about doubles facts. We discovered that the sum of a doubles fact is always even. Ask your child to explain why the sum of a doubles fact must be an even number. We will continue with our healthy eating discussion throughout the week and read about a silly character who goes shopping for some not so healthy snacks.
