Here are the two thunder cakes that parents made for the class last week. Also, take a peak at the video on how to make thunder cake. At the bottom you will find a coloring page.
We have been having a big problem with ants in the classroom. The students thought that a small hole in a the wall was the source of our problem. I told them I would mention it to the custodian at lunch. After lunch a student asked, "Did you talk to the comedian?"
Then, while in the computer lab, a student raised his hand for help and said "Google Charm" doesn't work. I love my job! The students shared their favorite day of the week and why it is their favorite. Here are some of their responses:
Here’s what students reported they did during our nine days off from school:
I went to ...
I rode scooters with my neighbors. I had a playdate with a friend. I had three sleepovers. I played my nintendo 3DS and I played my PS4 and my PS 3 I had two sleepovers at my house On Saturday starting at 7:00 we threw a surprise party for my auntie all the way until 12:00 am. Midnight At least 5 students reported they saw the Lego movie. What did the teacher do? I helped a group on a scavenger hunt by knowing the words to "Amazing Grace." I also had a wonderful time with my family including my daughter (visiting from Irvine), my parents (visiting from Los Angeles) , and my brother's family (visiting from Nevada City). Here's a great activity to do on your time away from school: “Challenging the Space Frontier” offers students the chance to learn the historical impact of space exploration through a time line, quizzes, and various reading and writing activities.
Students were given the following prompt:
Imagine that you are the president of the United States of America. Write three things you would do to make our country a better place to live. Here are some of their responses:
We had an assembly about science on Tuesday. We learned about states of matter. Randall said that matter comes in three states. One state is a solid. The molecules are close together, so a solid keeps its shape. Another state is called liquid. The molecules are loose and allow liquid to flow. The third state is gas. These molecules are spread out and travel into the air. When Randall mixed two things he created a gas. He mixed baking soda and vinegar. Then a balloon filled with the gas that the two made. We discovered that sublimation is a chemical process when a solids turns straight into a gas. It was an informative and educational assembly.
Honesty is important and here's why. If you are honest people will trust you. And, not telling lies is being a good friend. If you are honest people will want to be your friend and if you tell lies people won't want to be your friend and you will be lonely. Also, if you lie someone else might get in trouble for what you did. Another thing is you might get grounded it you lie. If you are honest God will like you. Being honest is the right thing to do. When you tell lies you make bigger problems each time you say them. Telling the truth and acting in a truthful way is how you can be honest. Teacher's Note: This month's core value is honesty. We read My Big Lie by Bill Cosby and discussed in partner pairs why we should be honest.
Our class went on a field trip to the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose.
We really liked water works because there was a lot of water and there was a tornado that sucked up balls. We liked doing the corn husk dolls because we got to make so many and we got to play with them. And, it was fun learning to make them. Autumn’s group went to a closed off area that will open on Saturday. There was instruments there . There were a giant guitar which was about four feet taller than you. There were buckets for drums and you pressed on a foot pedal to make them work. Also, there was a fan to blow chimes so they would make music. We also got to paint our faces. You could paint yourself. We got to go to an area where you got to play in the water, we got to throw balls, there was lots of fun things to do. We went to bubbleworks. We made big bubbles. There was one that made a rainbow when you pulled it. You could make bubbles with your fingers. There was this hanger that we pulled up from the ground to make giant bubbles. But, none of the bubbles came out, they stayed in that area. There was a section with a model of a woolly mammoth skeleton. There was a digging area where you could dust off bones that were in the ground. There were big bones you could stick on the wall, but they kept falling down. The woolly mammoth place area has a place where you could build the trunks and stuff and you could wash out fossils. You could feel some teeth from dinosaurs. There was a computer that you could create the area you wanted to be in and the animals that you wanted to be in it. There was a zoomer thing where you could zoom things in from a little tusk to a woolly mammoth. There was a place where you could take a picture of an animal then you put it on this thing that’s light and then you can see the bones from the animals. You could touch a skeleton of a mammoth. Mostly all of us got to go with one of our friends at the museum. Some of us made new friends there. They brought in a new staircase that makes music when you step on it. You could make different kind of music. Anywhere you stepped it makes music on the staircase. The music was very beautiful. You could play duets on the musical staircase. When you stepped on the staircase there was lights that lit up on the side. There was a garden area. We could play in the dirt and we got to plant our own flowers. We went to the fire truck. We got to climb on the ladder and drive the truck. We got to put on the helmet. We got to pull up a thing on a rope. So you have to try to get it all the way to the top and then you let it go. When you let it go it operates the fan. You grab onto a handle and spin it round and round and a plane or the trolley moves. The plane also when you keep spinning it, as you go faster you get to do more things like turn it and make it go side to side. There was this thing you draw on, but it was glow in dark. There was an area where you got to make necklaces, bracelets, and instruments. There was an area with chairs that you sat on and you danced like a disco. There was an area that was right next to the area that was four and under but it was for older kids and people made things out of strings from different countries you got to check it out and it was this big room. In secrets of circles there were circles you could spin something and make circles move and make a cylinder and sphere. We got a circle thing it was like a magnet and you would spin it and there was another circle you put on it and you would spin it and it would take a picture. There was a rowboat and girls wore a scarf or hat and there was pretend food and you could pretend to have a picnic in the boat. It was fun to go around and experience new things at the Childrens’ Discovery Museum. This week is National Computer Science Education Week. If you go to http://csedweek.org/learn you will be able to watch videos and try some coding yourself. The students watched the first video today and we demonstrated how the website works on the SmartBoard. At home your child can log on and try to complete all 20 code challenges. Here’s what the class though of the experience.
