Today we learned about what park rangers do from a real park ranger. We had a visit from Ranger John, who works at Henry Coe Park. He told us that he helps to protect the park, and the people and animals in the park. He also presents information to groups. He makes sure the park is safe by patrolling and talking with groups of people. He gets people the help they need and makes sure the forest doesn’t burn down.
Ranger John wears a utility belt as part of his job. On the belt he has 10 things that help him in his job. First he has pepper spray, a gun, a baton, and handcuffs. This helps him stop people from doing bad things. He also has a radio and a phone, to keep in touch with other rangers. Some other items on his utility belt include a flashlight, gloves, ammunition, and keys to the park.
Ranger John brought animal skins for us to touch. These pelts came from local animals that died naturally. There were also two skull bones for us to look at. In addition, we were able to touch and hold deer antlers. We talked about some of the animals that live in the local area.
Ranger John’s visit was a great way for us to learn more about the job of a park ranger.
