In math we've been learning about doubles and near doubles facts. Today we learned that the order of the addends doesn't change the sum. We are learning about healthy eating and writing a paragraph about why eating healthy is important. We had celery for a snack! Nineteen students thought the celery was good (with ranch dressing.) Yesterday the Principal, Mrs. Neal, visited our classroom. She reminded us not to say bad words. She also said that when you arrive at school in a car, you should be ready to get out quickly with your backpack in the car with you. Another thing she told us was to wear clothing that is good for play, p.e. and recess. This includes shoes with backs, and no spaghetti strap tops. Tops should have at least a two finger width at the shoulder. Tomorrow morning our class gets to lead the whole school in the Star-Spangled Banner.
Today our signal word was vegetables. We talked about healthy eating and wrote about foods we like to eat. Everyone had to close their paragraph with a statement saying whether or not their favorite foods are healthy. In math we learned about doubles facts. We discovered that the sum of a doubles fact is always even. Ask your child to explain why the sum of a doubles fact must be an even number. We will continue with our healthy eating discussion throughout the week and read about a silly character who goes shopping for some not so healthy snacks.
Today was Brendan's birthday. We enjoyed some delicious healthy mini corn muffins. Also, Brendan bought a variety of stamp pads for the class and a pipe builder set. We will use these items at center time and during rainy day recess. Thanks so much to Brendan for the class gifts. In addition, we learned how to complete the story chart for the homework book response. We also took our first spelling pretest of the year. This helps students know which words to study for the test on Friday. Your child brought home a homework packet in a folder. Also, your child has information on Nordstrom's new wrapping paper fundraiser.
Today we learned about related facts. Ask your child what is a related fact? Ask them to tell you why 9, 5, and 4 are related facts. Ask them what other related facts they know.
We also read a funny book called Who Wants Arthur? It is about an ordinary brown dog named Arthur. Ask your child about the unusual tricks Arthur did. The First Day of Second Grade We learned a lot on the first day of second grade. We made a birthday graph and a getting to school graph. We learned the “class, yes”attention getter. We also learned the five rules of the class. It was fun to learn the class rules. We learned not to be scared of going into a classroom of new people. And we’re glad to have made some new friends at school. We met our new teacher her name is Mrs. De Villez. We also did a word search about school. We read a funny story about the jitters. Having the jitters means we are nervous, scared, or worried. We learned a lot on the first day and will learn a lot this year.
