We are learning about measurement in math. Students have been measuring many classroom objects using paperclips, cubes, and rulers. We have learned about different units of measurement such as inch, centimeter, foot, and meter. First, students must estimate the length of various objects and then they measure to check their estimate. It is important for students to use their measuring tools correctly by starting at zero and knowing the correct stopping point.
The class took a test on subtracting two digits with regrouping on Friday. I am pleased with the results. Most students are performing the algorithm successfully and are making strong gains in this important second grade standard. Please look for the test in the Friday Folder that goes home on January 31.
Students also created some artwork for the Nordstrom School office. They showed off their subtraction skills by completing several problems on a Valentine picture and then coloring the picture according to the code. We mounted the pictures on pink squares. They should be on display in the office through the month of February.
In writing, students are completing their octopus report and are beginning research on a second animal report. We also wrote captions to go with the pictures from our field trip to the Children’s Discovery Museum.
Our phonics lessons focused on the “ar” sound in car. We also reviewed the digraphs sh, th, ch, and wh.
We read My Big Lie, by Bill Cosby and discussed the importance of honesty. Ask your child what was Little Bill’s punishment for telling a lie. Also, see our blog page for students input on why honesty is important.
Our school year is more than halfway over. It will be the 100th day of school on Tuesday.
