Thank you all for the birthday wishes and the restaurant gift card. I loved the flowers and the balloon poster from the students as well. I love celebrating with my wonderful students and it was a joy to spend my birthday (and everyday) teaching them.
This week we studied the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We learned new vocabulary words including integration, segregation, civil rights, and character. We focused on Dr. King’s desire to achieve civil rights for all people through peaceful means. We talked about his emphasis on non violence and how we could follow his principles at school, at home and in our community. We studied the words of his famous “I have a dream speech.” and discovered what it means in kid-friendly terms.
We also continued with our animal unit by studying about the amazing octopus. We are writing an octopus report. We continue to learn the steps in the writing process including making a writing plan, writing a rough draft, revising and editing our work, and finally making a copy suitable for publishing.
In math we did “number talks” to share mental math strategies. Students take a math problem and then share out how they solved the problem. By sharing our ideas students learn new strategies and other ways of thinking about math problems.
On Thursday the class participated in the Nordstrom Spell-A-Thon. All of the students did their best and nine of them did well enough to go to the second round of the Spelling Bee. They will try for the top grade level prize on Thursday. The Spell-A-Thon pledge sheets and test results went home. Please check your child’s Friday Folder for more information.
