This week we read Ant by Rebecca Stefoff. This is a nonfiction text that tells about different kinds of ants found throughout the world. We learned how ants work together to get food and the types of food that ants eat. The book includes up close photographs of ants at work. When a photo was especially interesting we learned to exclaim, “How Scientific!” We also finished our Amazing Animals poster by listing many amazing things about ants including that they are very strong and they use their antennae to smell, feel, and communicate. To play a word game that will review some of the vocabulary from the story click below:
We also read about the Olympics and learned that the athletes who make it to the Olympics must have determination and perseverance. We read about Evan Lysacek a figure skater who trained for the Olympics and fell when he performed in 2006, but then won the gold when he returned to the Olympics in 2010.
We attended an assembly about science. We learned about matter and energy. Ask your child what are the three states of matter? Also, see our blog post about the assembly.
We learned about possessive nouns and how to use an apostrophe to show ownership in our writing. We also continued to work on our animal reports in writing.
We finished our math unit on measuring length. Students took a test on the topic, which you will find in their Friday Folder. We began to learn about telling time. We learned there are 60 minutes in an hour and that when the minute hand moves from one number to the next that 5 minutes have passed. Also, we learned that quarter past means fifteen minutes after the hour, quarter to means 15 minutes before the next hour. When someone says it is half past, then 30 minutes have gone by since the last hour and there are 30 more minutes until the next hour.
