Then we finished our unit on the Civil War learning about the Emancipation Proclamation, the end of the Civil War, and the celebration of Juneteenth.
In math we have been working on subtracting larger numbers. Students are using place value disks and relating subtraction to the vertical method. We model problems on the place value chart while simultaneously recording the changes on the vertical form. We learned to start with the ones and ask the question, "Do I have enough ones?" They exchange a ten disk for 10 ones when necessary and record the change on the written form. Then the students repeat the steps with the tens.
Students learned about idioms, a saying that means something different from what the words seem to mean. Ask your child about some of the idioms they learned about in class and their meaning.
