This week we read Carousel, a realistic fiction story about a girl named Alex who is unhappy on her birthday. She is angry because her father doesn’t make it to the party. She groans about her presents and grumbles at her guests. Finally, her mother sends her to bed and she spends an unrestful night filled with strange dreams. When she awakens in the morning her father is there and she is no longer grumpy.
Our phonics lessons focused on the “y” sound at the end of two syllable words such as angry and grumpy. We also learned that adding the prefix “un” changes a word to mean “not” or the opposite of the base word.
Two parents helped us out by baking chango bars and bringing bagels to class so we could enjoy some of the foods mentioned in last week’s story Jalapeno Bagels. In our journals students wrote about foods they know how to cook or would like to learn to cook.
In math, we continue to study graphs. This week we learned to make Pictographs and to use graphs to solve problems. We also celebrated Pi Day by learning what is Pi and how scientists and others use Pi to solve problems. We also watched a video of a person calculating Pi with pies! This video tied in with our vocabulary lesson earlier in the week on homophones.
