Officer Buckle and Gloria. This is a humorous story about a police officer who loves to give safety tips. Unfortunately, nobody listens until he brings his dog Gloria. Ask your child to name two or three of Officer Buckle’s safety tips or to think of a few of his or her own. In addition, we are learning about pronouns and how to use them correctly in speaking and writing
In writing, we read and responded to three books about dogs. We read a nonfiction book about dogs; a fictional story about a dog who can speak; and a narrative about a dog sled ride in the snow on a moonlit night. After each book we completed a written response and discussed the different elements of writing a story, report, or personal narrative.
In math, we are practicing two-digit subtraction with regrouping. We also learned how to check our subtraction by adding. A strong knowledge of math facts is key to understanding and completing the math problems presented in class and in the homework. If your child is on letter “R” or below in Rocket Math, please help him or her practice. We do Rocket Math tests on Mondays and Thursdays. The Monday test comes home in the homework and the Thursday test is in the Friday Folder. Please check for your child’s Rocket Math test and encourage him or her to practice these facts.
The Nordstrom Spell-A-Thon Spelling Bee is Thursday, January 16. Please study the words and visit the Nordstrom School Website for more information. The words from last week’s and next week’s spelling lists are taken from the study list. Look in your child’s Friday Folder for the test taken on January 10. Study the words that were missed over the weekend to help get ready for the Bee.
