Welcome to Fifth Grade
Welcome to the 2017- 2018 school year. I am looking forward to a fantastic year in fifth grade. I’ve spent my summer preparing for this year, and I am excited to delve deeply into this curriculum. We are in the first year of a new English Language Arts Curriculum and the second year of our Math Investigations 3 Common Core. It is my desire to be here for your child to help him or her succeed and prepare for middle school and beyond. In this class, we will all learn from one another. While each of us is at a different starting point, we will all make progress. I value work that is challenging because that is how we develop new skills and understanding. I encourage students to persevere through difficulties and to learn from their mistakes. As we gain academic skills we will work together to collaborate, problem solve, and help each other to grow and achieve great things.
Parent volunteers are essential to our classroom. Volunteers need to be cleared by the district office. The Nordstrom School website provides details on how to obtain clearance. If you are interested volunteering, please email me. We need a Room Parent, Copy Parent, Friday Folder Helper, and Yearbook Coordinator.
Regular attendance is essential for school success. Students need to come to school daily, arrive on time and remain for the entire school day. The last few minutes of the school day are essential for students to review the day’s learning, put homework into their planners, and gather materials and belonging. Please do not pull your child during the last 15 minutes of the school day. If your child is absent, please contact the office to clear the absence.
Please be sure your child wears suitable clothing to school that will allow him or her to fully participate in daily physical education lessons and activities that may require sitting on the floor. Also, it is important that your child gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast before school. Lunch is at 12:00 Students are encouraged to eat a healthy snack at the 9:45 recess.
This year, the beginning of the year forms are online. Please read, fill in information where necessary, and acknowledge all documents in the Aeries portal. Then, print the updated emergency card and signature sheet. Please return these documents to me by August 25th.
Also, please mark your calendars to attend Back to School Night on Thursday, September 7. I’m looking forward to a great year in fifth grade. Every day we will learn more in room 4!
