After we finish the daily language, we stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance and do daily calendar work. Then, it is time for math.
In our math module we are setting the foundation for students to master sums and differences to 20 and apply these skills to numbers at least through 100. At the same time we are learning about place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. At this stage, your second grader should be able to draw pictures and write word and number sentences to explain his or her answers to mathematical problems. We went over the homework together in class on Friday and students used a red pen to take notes on improving their work. You should find the math pages from last week’s homework in the Friday Folder with student notations in red.
Your child needs to master addition and subtraction facts to 20 in order to do the math in second grade. Please spend 5 to 10 minutes daily on math facts practice. Use the xtramath.org program or flash cards for this purpose.
We compared the two sounds for the letters G and C this week. We read sentences with words that use C and G and identified which sounds we heard in the words. We also analyzed the words to figure out when to use each sound. One strategy is to try it one way and if it doesn't sound right, use the other sound. Here are some examples in sentences:
- I went to the city to see the game.
- Please place the garbage next to the huge tricycle.
- It is urgent that we agree to clean the gym.
- I had ginger iced tea and got the hiccups.
We finished our fairy tale study by reading the original version of Beauty and the Beast . It was different than the Disney story with which most of us are familiar. Ask your child what was different and which version he or she preferred.
We learned about rural, suburban, and urban communities in our Scholastic News. You should find the issue in the Friday Folder. Also, you will find a Scholastic Book order in the Friday Folder. The deadline for orders is September 19. When you order books using my code, we earn books for our classroom as well.
