Students explored the Mammoth Discovery exhibit where they could dig for fossils and examine them. They visited the Rainbow Market where they learned about healthy foods and making good food choices. In the Secrets of Circles area students were able to see how circles are used in many cultures and discovered that circles help people in moving heavy loads and supporting structures.
Other areas included the Streets section where students could generate power to make a plane fly and trolley move. The Water Ways Exhibit was a favorite of many students. Students discovered the effects of water pressure and gravity on the flow of water through interactive play.
Every exhibit provided students with an opportunity to learn by observing, examining, cooperating, exploring, and creating. Be sure to ask your child about the different exhibits at the Children’s Discovery Museum and find out which one was his or her favorite.
Our Project Cornerstone ABC Reader visited the class this week. Students heard the book When Sophie Gets Angry – Really, Really Angry by Molly Bang. In the story the main character gets upset and doesn't know how to manage her anger but takes the time to cool off and regain her composure. Students learned that strong feelings are normal, but that they are able to use coping skills to manage strong emotions.
Students learned that when they start to have out of control emotions, they need to stop and think:
- Stop
- Take a few deep breaths
- Count to 10 Slowly
- Think what can you do to respond in a safe manner
We are learning strategies for subtracting larger numbers in math. Students are expected to use manipulatives and math drawings to show their understanding of decomposing a ten and then relating this to the written method. Look at the problem below and see if your child can explain the drawing to you using place value language.
