In class, we are learning to take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests on books students read. At Wednesday's back to school night I will explain how you can receive regular updates on tests your child takes on our AR program.
We began our physical science unit on Simple Machines. Students learned that there are six types of simple machines, a lever, screw, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, and inclined plane. We learned that machines make work easier. We took a close look at examples of a wheel and axle and took a field trip to a pulley (the flag pole). At the end of the month, students will have a Simple Machines project to complete.
In math students practiced addition sums with a card game called "Five in a Row with Four Cards." Students will bring home the game for homework this coming week. In addition, students practiced their mathematical reasoning skills with a game called "Guess My Number." Using the hundreds chart students asked a series of questions to try to guess the number. Our math talk focused on questions we could ask that would help us guess the number with fewer questions. Students will bring this game home as well. Please play these games with your child for homework. Also, please keep the game cards in a safe place at home as more math games will be coming home that will require the cards.
