In math we are learning about attributes of shapes. This week we examined quadrilaterals. Ask your child to explain what makes a shape a quadrilateral. We learned that all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. See if your child can explain why this is true.
Our ABC Reader visited our class and read My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig. The story is about Monica who has been friends with another girl since Kindergarten. Sometimes her so called friend can be very mean with her words and actions and Monica doesn't understand why. Monica faces emotional bullying among friends who use words and actions to humiliate and exclude. Monica seeks help from a supportive adult—her mother—and learns to cope and thrive by facing her fears and reclaiming power from her bully.
After reading the story, we role played several scenarios that students might face on the playground or in their neighborhood. We helped students develop positive self-talk to counteract the hurtful words and actions of others.
At the end of the lesson students recited the upstander pledge (below).
